Religious clothing is common in most religions. For example, in many Christian churches members of the clergy wear special clothing. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members who have attended the temple and made special covenants with the Lord, wear what is known as the temple garment.
If you ask a Mormon about their underwear, you'll get a variety of responses. Some refuse to discuss it, which is their right (it is their underwear you're talking about, after all). Others may discuss it openly with you. There is really nothing to hide about the garments, it is just something that people are not always comfortable discussing. All it really comes down to is that members of the LDS Church wear the temple garment to remind them of the covenants they've made.
